NSOSE Receives Federal 501(c)(3) Recognition as Public Charity

05 MAR 2026 — The National Society of Software Engineers (NSOSE) has officially received recognition from the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) public charity. This designation establishes NSOSE as a federally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the software engineering profession through community, ethics, professional development, and advocacy.

With federal nonprofit status now in place, NSOSE can accept tax-deductible charitable contributions and pursue grants and partnerships that support programs for software engineers across the United States. The designation represents an important step in building a long-term institution focused on strengthening the profession and supporting engineers throughout their careers.

NSOSE was founded to provide a professional home for software engineers who value ethical practice, strong technical standards, and a collaborative professional community. The organization is developing initiatives focused on professional recognition, industry dialogue, and the long-term resilience of the engineering workforce.

The society will continue expanding its membership programs, community initiatives, and professional resources as it works toward building a national organization that represents and supports software engineers.

National Society of Software Engineers Introduces Policy Hub for Software Engineering Professionals

DEC 2025 — The National Society of Software Engineers (NSOSE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting software engineers through professional standards, ethics, and advocacy, has introduced a new Policy Hub designed to help technology professionals stay informed about public policy developments affecting the software engineering profession.

The NSOSE Policy Hub highlights active U.S. legislation, executive actions, and regulatory activity relevant to the software engineering profession and the broader technology sector. The resource is intended for software engineers, developers, executives, educators, entrepreneurs, and technologists involved in the creation, management, and governance of software systems.

The introduction of the Policy Hub follows a year of foundational development during 2025. During this period, NSOSE adopted its organizational bylaws, deployed a modern membership platform, and appointed regional directors and initial board members to establish governance and national coordination.

The Policy Hub is available to NSOSE members and includes optional subscription features that allow members to receive notifications when new policy content is published or when existing material is updated.

NSOSE plans to continue expanding member resources and professional programs as the organization enters its next phase of development.

NSOSE Formally Launches to Support and Advocate for Software Engineers

13 MAY 2025 — The National Society of Software Engineers (NSOSE), a nonprofit organization founded in 2020, has formally launched its public initiatives aimed at supporting software engineers through community-building, professional development, ethics, and advocacy.

Founded by Nathan A. Overbey, NSOSE was created in response to long-standing challenges facing software engineers, including diminishing job stability, ethical concerns around AI, and a lack of collective representation within the industry. While initial groundwork began in 2020, renewed development in 2025 has accelerated NSOSE’s launch efforts, laying a foundation for national engagement and long-term impact.

The organization’s early focus includes building a values-driven membership base, setting standards for ethical software practices, and advocating for a stronger, more secure future for software professionals.
